New Zealand's ski seasons vary but are generally, in the South Island from early June until early October and, in the North Island from late June to mid November.
The prevailing westerly weather patterns and the maritime climate produce unique conditions. Cold, powder producing storms traditionally in July and August and warmer spring conditions from about mid September. All ski and snowboard areas in New Zealand are treeless offering wide-open slopes and a perfect mix of undefined terrain and marked trails. There are only a few commercial ski areas that offer on-hill accommodation so the majority of the skiing done in New Zealand is green valley skiing.
There are 17 commercially operated ski and snowboard areas in New Zealand, the remainder of the fields are largely ski club operated. These non-profit organisations operate accommodation and the ski areas welcome club membership and casual visitors to their slopes.

Main Ski Areas - North Island
Mt Ruapehu
Mt Ruapehu towers up to a height of 2797 metres and hosts three ski areas on its slopes. Whakapapa and Turoa are both large commercial ski areas offering all of the usual services, while local club members operate Tukino as a club field.
Mt Egmont
High on the upper slopes of Mt Egmont's nearly perfect cone lies the Manganui Ski Area. Operated by the Stratford Mountain Club, it offers a thrilling experience for skiers and snowboarders with some of the steepest terrain in the country.
Main Ski Areas - South Island
Queenstown
Queenstown has established itself as a highly successful ski-resort, well known internationally. Coronet Peak's and The Remarkables lift facilities, snowmaking, night-skiing and scenery all contribute to Queenstown's popularity.
Wanaka
While Wanaka's Treble Cone has a great variety of terrain on offer, Cardrona has proved very popular with families. Both provide excellent commercial facilities. Waiorau Nordic Snow Farm is perfect for those wanting to try their hand at Nordic skiing.
Mackenzie
The Mackenzie district houses both the large commercial ski field Mt Dobson and the smaller commercial area Ohau, near Twizel, which has all the amenities of a larger field - without the queues.
Canterbury
Canterbury boasts a multitude of different ski areas within two hours drive of Christchurch, with numerous commercial operations and over six club areas to explore - each offering its own unique alpine experience.
St Arnaud
Set amidst Nelson Lakes National Park are the Mt Robert and Rainbow ski fields. Rainbow is a commercial operation with full facilities and well groomed trails, while Mt Robert is owned and operated by a local ski club.
