| Ski - Mt Ruapehu |
Mt Ruapehu towers up to a height of 2797 metres and hosts three ski areas on its slopes. Whakapapa and Turoa are both large commercial ski areas offering all of the usual services, while local club members operate Tukino as a club field.
Ski Areas
Whakapapa
In the North Island, the big buzz is skiing on Mt Ruapehu - Taupo's active volcano in the Tongariro National Park. Natural half pipes, created by lava flows, are a memorable feature of volcanic skiing. Whakapapa is on the north-easterly slopes of Mt Ruapehu. It is New Zealands biggest and busiest ski area. It has a total skiable area of 400ha, it has a total of 43 runs ranging from beginner, to off piste expert. Accessing these runs is a total of 16 lifts with a total uphill capacity of 26,710 skiers per hour.
Happy Valley is a self contained beginners area seperate from the rest of the ski area. It is situated just below the Top O' the Bruce. It is sheltered, it has it's own ski rental and cafetaria, and the terrain is 100% covered by snowmaking.
The "east" side of the ski area is where the majority of the lifts and services are. It has a variety of terrain for every skiing ability.
The 'west' hosts and cafeteria, a quad chairlift and a T-Bar. The highlight of this area is 'Black Magic', an off piste area, which is lift accessed back country skiing at it's best.

Turoa offers an unrivaled winter experience for all - a place to escape, relax and let your spirit run free! With breathtaking views and untarnished surroundings, Turoa provides both inspiration and exhilaration.
The access road starts under the railway bridge at the Ohakune Junction. The Junction is at the mountain end of Ohakune. The access road is 17km long, it assends through beech forest and open slopes and is sealed all of the way.

Tukino
Nestled onto the Desert Road side of Mt Ruapehu, Tukino Ski field offers the unique combination of adventure and lack of crowds, just the way that skiing used to be. Coupled with the friendliness and camaraderie only ever found on club-operated fields.
The Tukino slopes are sheltered from the prevailing winds and the field is often operating in clear weather when the rest of the mountain is in cloud. Tukino is snowboard friendly, and is open to alpine climbers as well as skiers.
The 4WD access road turns off the desert road at a signpost about 20km north of Waiouru. It is nine kilometres to the car park and from there 4WD require chains, or it is possible to get picked up at this point.
