The first air transport to connect Stewart Island and the mainland was Stewart Island Air Service, operating an amphibian aircraft. The plane landed in the harbour and taxied up the beach to the local hotel.
Twenty years ago this was succeeded by Southern Air Ltd with the establishment of an airstrip at Ryan's Creek.
Today, Stewart Island Flights is a locally owned and operated business. We maintain scheduled flights linking Stewart Island and Invercargill as well as a number of exciting alternatives providing access to the more remote reaches of the island.
Flights take about twenty minutes landing at Ryan's Creek airfield on Stewart Island. A five minute mini-bus trip takes you to the main centre, Oban Township, on the waterfront of Halfmoon Bay.

Flight Schedule
Stewart Island Flights operates scheduled daily flights between Invercargill airport and Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island.
The flight is quick, only 20 minutes, comfortable and very scenic with panoramic views of Oreti Beach, The Port of Bluff, and Stewart Islands many bays, clear waters and offshore islands.
Courtesy transport is provided from the airfield to Halfmoon Bay.
Scheduled flights 365 days a year.

Aircraft
We proudly operate two Britten Norman Islanders, two Piper Cherokee Six and one Cessna 185. All aircraft are maintained to the highest standard and fulfil all safety requirements.
The Flight
Journeying across Foveaux Strait, you will see Dog Island, with its lighthouse, outside the entrance to Bluff Harbour, Ruapuke Island and The Titi Island Group. Then, as you get closer, Stewart Island 'The Emerald of the South' appears, with its golden beaches, clear turquoise-coloured water and verdant green native bush.
For those interested in seeing the diversity of Stewart Island, Bush to Sand Dunes, Wetlands to outcrops, scenic flights can be tailored to people's needs, desires and budgets. Stewart Island Flights are happy to quote for aircraft charter to any airport in New Zealand.
Passing over some beautiful bays, you will touch down at the Ryan's Creek Airport, where a courtesy coach will take you to the Stewart Island Flights Depot at Oban Township, the hub of Stewart Island. At the Depot, which is also the Island Post Office, you can book many of the activities available on Stewart Island.
Flight Options
In addition to regular daily flights between Invercargill and Stewart Island, there are a number of different flight options and aircraft are also available for charters for flight-seeing, seasonal special expeditions, hunting parties, conferences, etc.
Stewart Island
A visit to Stewart Island is a holiday with a difference, an experience which is difficult to adequately describe, but must be experienced to be understood.
Those who enjoy quiet bush walks can leave habitation behind and wander through fernery, moss-carpeted glades, where the peace and tranquility is disturbed only by bird song. Visitors are drawn to the Island's unspoilt beauty and unique lifestyle. Nowhere else in New Zealand is there such access to native forest, birdlife or range of activities.
The natural world of Stewart Island is close at hand and easily accessible. With only one percent of The Island being settled, there is a huge unspoilt area beckoning the adventurous visitor who chooses to travel further afield.
