Ferry service across Foveaux Strait
Stewart Island Experience operates daily scheduled ferry services between Bluff and Stewart Island.
With densely forested hills, descending to a coastline of rocky outcrops and creamy golden sand beaches, Stewart Island is known for its rich marine and bird life. Most of the island is part of the Rakiura National Park, with settlement largely confined to the small township of Oban.
Readily accessible by our ferry, choose a day excursion or an extended stay.
From Oban, Stewart Island Experience operates land and water based tours and hires out vehicles and specialist adventure gear. The island is a walker's paradise, from short walks to more strenuous hikes. Alternatively go kayaking, mountain biking, bird watching or relax and enjoy the stunning scenery.

Fleet
Stewart Island Experience recently purchased Foveaux Express, the existing ferry operation and Campbelltown Coach Transfers from Stewart Island Marine Services.
The current fleet of vessels includes the Southern Express, build in Invercargill by the Gough Brothers in 1996, carrying 62 passengers plus the Foveaux Express, a purpose built 23 metre catamaran carrying 100 passengers and freight. Both ferries are powered by twin 820 hp V12 MTU motors, giving a service speed of 21 knots plus.
The Foveaux Express and the Southern Express make regular departures from the port of Bluff to Halfmoon Bay on Stewart Island, in a journey that takes one hour across Foveaux Strait.
At Bluff vehicle storage is available.
On Board
During the journey, complimentary tea and coffee is available and light food can be purchased. The Foveaux Express and Southern Express have a liquor licence, this enables visitors to enjoy a glass of New Zealand wine while crossing Foveaux Strait. There are toilet facilities at both terminals and on board the vessels.
